Kyphosis (Hunchback) Types and Causes

Kyphosis Kyphosis one of the common disorders that can be affect the spinal bones, sometime its called hunchback, its an excessive curvature in the upper back of the spine, normally the upper back have a small convex curvature, but in Kyphosis case the curvature is more than normal as we see in the photo and its look like hunchback , it also can be associate with muscle fatigue, back pain and in high level it can cause neurological problems .


Kyphosis types and Causes 

1- Postural kyphosis is the most common between them
Causes
poor position ( sitting , standing ) , aging, fracture and poor muscle balance, muscle weakness

2- Congenital kyphosis it can be occur in infant with 
Causes
malformation of vertebra

3- Nutritional kyphosis  its mostly occur in children 
Causes
poor nutrition and poor vitamin D intake leading to Rickets 

4- Scheuermann's kyphosisCauses 
long period of standing or sitting position and other unknown causes

Other Causes of Kyphosis

1- Osteoperosis
2- Arthritis osteoarthritis
3- Infection
4- Tumor benign or malignant

How do i know if i have Kyphosis ?
actually in the most cases its seen by your naked eyes but in cases primary or beginning cases you can try this test

1- stand in front of mirror
2- then detect your jugular notch " in between the two clavicle bone "
jugular notch

3- then turn to your side and use your other hand to feeling the vertebra bone in your neck by using your
fingers find the vertebra that is the basic of your neck or first vertebra of your body or the first thoracic vertebra
How do i know if i have Kyphosis


4- then look at the mirror if the jugular notch lower than first thoracic vertebra notch that's means you have kyphosis but if in the same line thats normal

  1. I was in physical therapy for a while for this. I always had super bad posture but it wasn't the only thing that added to my condition. If I hadn't had it corrected in time I think I would be bent like a c now, I am so grateful that we can correct things if caught early.
