the spine formed of a vertebrae bones, this bones have an rubbery soft rings ( call disk ) in between each other, the Herniated Disk can occur in this soft rubbery disk, when one of this disks splitting to outside this can affect the nerve and then you will feel the common symptoms of Herniated Disk in your arms or legs including :
1-Pain
2-Numbness
3-Muscle weakness
but this symptoms can be vary in places and severity that’s depend on the place of Herniated Disk and how much it destroy, the commonest place of Herniated Disk is Lowe back ( Lumber Spine )

Causes of  Herniated Disk :
1- Aging is commonest cause of Herniated Disk due to decrease of flexibility
2- Trauma as falling or accidents
3- sports injuries or sudden strain
4-  high load or compression in back bones or any unsafe activities that you may do as Lifting heavy object  
5- obesity

Complications of Herniated Disk:
1- Bowel and bladder problems as Urine Incontinence
2- sensation disturbance in relation to the site of Herniated Disk
3- symptoms severities as sever pain, muscle laxity

Physical therapy treatment for Herniated Disk 
First your physical therapy will ask you to rest and avoid some activities specially if you are athlete but its ok you will back to your sport again, and you should  know that Herniated Disk takes time to recovery

A- Decreases Muscle spasm to prevent any progressive of your condition
1- Massage to decreases muscle spasm in your back to prevent any unwanted movement that may increase your symptoms
2- Electrical therapy stimulation is one of choices for decreasing muscle spasm
B- improve your blood circulation by using cold and heat therapy to the area of injury that's improve injury healing, also hydrotherapy ( swimming pool therapy techniques ) with warm or cold water can be help in treating herniated disk just don't surprising if your physical therapy use ice or warm water with you
