Part - 4 - Knee Joint
goniometer for Knee joint

A- Flexion 
1- Patient in supine position to allow free range of motion for Knee joint ask the patient to flex his\her hip joint
2- Place the center of goniometer over the lateral epicondyle of the femur and the stationary arm of goniometer aligned with greater trochanter
3- Ask the patient to flex his\her knee as much as possible
4- by move the other arm of goniometer aligned with lateral malleolus to form goniometer angle
5- read the degree

Normal range for Knee flexion
  • 141o + or - 5.3o (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
  • 150o (American Medical Association)
  • 142.5o (mean), 5.4o, (standard deviation) (Boone and Azen)
B- Extenion



1- Patient in prone position with knee on the edge of table to allow free and full range of motion for Knee joint
2- Place the center of goniometer over the lateral epicondyle of the femur and the stationary arm of goniometer aligned with greater trochanter
3- ask the patient to extend his\her knee joint as much as possible


4- by move the other arm of goniometer aligned with lateral malleolus to form goniometer angle
5- read the degree
 extenion goniometer for Knee joint

Normal range for Knee flexion
  • 141o + or - 5.3o (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
  • 150o (American Medical Association)
  • 142.5o (mean), 5.4o, (standard deviation) (Boone and Azen)

I feel maintaining a good quadriceps to hamstring ratio is the best way to ensure a safe return to sports as well as preventing further injury.
