Goniometer for Elbow joint Part 2

part -2- Elbow joint
Elbow joint

A- Flexion 

1- Patient in supine position with arm in supinated 
2- place the center point of goniometer over the lateral epicondyle of humerus 
3- Ask patient to flex his\her elbow joint as much as possible
4- fix one of goniometer arms parallel to humerus and move the other arm parallel to radius 
5- the angle will formed then you can read the degrees 
flexion Elbow joint

Normal range for elbow flexion 
  • 141° ± 4.9° (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
  • 140° (American Medical Association)
  • 142.9° (mean) 5.6° (standard deviation), (Boone and Azen)
B- Extenion

1- Patient in supine position with arm in supinated, place pillow under the elbow joint in case if there is hyperextenion 
2- place the center point of goniometer over the lateral epicondyle of humerus and the stationary arm over acromion
3- Ask patient to extend his\her elbow joint as much as possible
4- place the moving arm of goniometer parallel to radius 
5- the angle will formed then you can read the degrees 

Normal range for elbow extenion 
  • 0.3° ± 2.0° (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
  • 0.0° (American Medical Association)
  • 0.6° (mean) 3.1° (standard deviation), (Boone and Azen)
