Goniometer for ankle joint part 5 the last

Part - 5 - Ankle Joint
Goniometer for ankle joint

A- Dorsiflexion

1- Patient in prone position with knee flex
2- Place the center of goniometer over the lateral mallelous and the stationary arm of goniometer aligned with fibular head 
3- Ask the patient to dorsiflexied hie/her ankle joint 
4- By move the other goniometer arm aligned with fifth metatarsal
5- Read the degree

Goniometer for ankle dorsiflexion

Normal range for ankle dorsiflexion
  • 13o + or - 4.4o (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
  • 20o (American Medical Association)
  • 12.6o (mean), 4.4o, (standard deviation) (Boone and Azen)

B- Plantarflexion

1- Patient in supine position with knee extend
2- Place the center of goniometer over the lateral mallelous and the stationary arm of goniometer aligned with fibular head 
3- Ask the patient to Plantarflexion hie/her ankle joint 
4- By move the other goniometer arm aligned with fifth metatarsal
5- Read the degree

Normal range for ankle Plantarflexion 
  • 56o + or - 6.1o (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)
  • 40o (American Medical Association)
  • 56.2o (mean), 6.1o, (standard deviation) (Boone and Azen)
